Thank you for visiting our page.
Neath Asc swimmers are swimming 60k in teams of 12 on 24th September 2022 to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
Neath Asc is raising money in memory of our coach Mike Spittle. Mike joined Neath Asc in 1963 and held many roles from Head Coach to Chairman and bus driver.
Mike dedicated his life to Neath Asc and has taught generations of swimmers. Mikes passion lives on through his swimmers. He is missed by us all at every training session, competition and event.
Neath Asc is also celebrating the story of our club captain Garyn Jones who had a pace maker fitted at 11 months old. Garyn has since received a further three open heart surgeries. Garyns fitness levels saw him out of bed and at home much quicker than expected following his valve replacement surgery in 2020.
Garyn began swimming competitively with Neath ASC, after being told by doctors that contact sports could present a risk to his pacemaker. Despite this turbulent journey medically Garyn hopes his experiences will encourage others into the pool.
Garyn said: “I hope I can inspire others to take up swimming, It’s the full package – it’s helped me loads – obviously my physical fitness, but the social side has really helped to build up my confidence and I love the competitions"
Garyn and Mike would compare their scars with Mike joking that they were now a matching pair.
BHF is a charity very close to Neath Asc and we would be grateful of any donations of support.
The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. It's only thanks to support from people like us that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures. £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist, but every pound helps so please give what you can to help us hit our target. Thanks!
