Story
My charity fitness challenge this year is two super sprint triathlons! I’m doing this to challenge myself, to raise awareness of liver disease and to raise funds for the British Liver Trust who have really helped me with my own liver condition. I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis in 2019 after a few months of wipe out fatigue & joint pain which at the time I put down to working too hard in the police. In fact blood tests and a liver biopsy showed it was a permanent autoimmune liver disease which is now well managed due to daily medication. Physical activity helps me to manage both the condition and the side effects of the steroids and immunosuppressants I take every day. I love swimming, cycling and running - all very slowly and leisurely. The super sprint triathlon distance is the shortest possible but it’s still going to be a challenge with my stiff joints - I am determined to complete it. My first triathlon was at Blenheim Palace on 4th June which I completed 💥 and my second is on Sunday 17th September at Dorney Lake (400m 🏊🏻♀️ 10.6k 🚴♀️ 2.5k 🏃♀️)
There are over 100 types of liver condition; some are rare and 90% can be prevented but currently many are diagnosed in an emergency setting when it is too late for treatment. Risk factors for liver disease include obesity, viral hepatitis and alcohol.
The British Liver Trust is a brilliant charity that provides advice and information to patients and families; campaigns and works with healthcare professionals to improve early diagnosis and patient care and raises awareness of how to look after your liver and supports research.
Thank you SO MUCH for your support - any donation however small is much appreciated and will make a difference! And please don’t forget to Gift Aid your donation if you are a UK taxpayer.
