Hi my name is Jacob. This page is all about a sailing project I'm putting together to help raise awareness of mental illness and raise funds for mind. My aim is to sail single-handed, around the world. The start of the sail will begin on the last day of Cowes week, one of the largest sailing events on the global race calendar, starting at the squadron line off of Cowes Royal Yacht Squadron and ending by crossing the line back at the squadron. I want to work along side the mental health charity, Mind, using this project to reach into every household, producing a wave of positive awareness about mental health, and generating a natural space in every community, for mental illness to be talked about openly and with greater acceptance. Hopefully, this will help to lift the stigma associated with mental health problems that has been with us for so long, and create a new openness that will bring help and understanding to all those suffering and struggling with the feeling of being trapped and alone. This is particularly close to my heart because, depression and social anxiety have been something I’ve struggled with from an early age. I'm now 37, working as a bus driver for the past seven years, and married with a beautiful wife and three gorgeous children, but I know too well the loneliness and inner struggle with mental illness. It’s something which hard to describe in words, but sailing solo non-stop around the world and dealing with nature’s at its most raw, is far less daunting for me than coping with the inner dark worlds that depression and social anxiety create. I want the opportunity for this venture to reach out and remind those struggling, of our human spirit and the strength we have behind us even when it feels that all of life is against us. To stand strong and not give up, and to hear from someone who has experienced dark days, and been through what you’re experiencing, that there is hope and eventually life will give you that relief and peace of mind you are longing for. At present I'm at the stage of gaining public support and interest and then will be looking for and approaching companies who would like to be involved in this campaign as a corporate sponsor to fund the purchase of the boat and other expenses.
