I wasn't aware of the Alzheimer's Society until my grandad got diagnosed with Dementia.
Dementia is caused by disease of the brain; symptoms include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. It is progressive and eventually terminal. Dementia can happen to anyone and there is currently no cure. But with the right support, people can live well with dementia throughout the condition.
800,000 people live with dementia in the UK today with nowhere near enough services provided to meet their needs.
Alzheimer's Society provide much needed support and advice to all those that deal with the disease on a day to day basis. In 2010/11 Alzheimer's Society spent more than £51 million on charitable activities, almost 90% of which continued to be on providing care services and direct services to people with dementia and those who care for them and £2.5 million spent on research into the causes and treatment of dementia.
Each year, around £2 million is invested in their research programme. This money funds important research that will help to improve the quality of life for people with dementia, by tackling questions related to the causes of dementia, investigating good practice in care and treatment, and pursuing a cure.
