Gaza is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. But worse still is when the populace is deprived of the prime source of life – water. Ongoing assaults have left the territory’s 1.8 million residents facing an imminent water crisis. Without water, no reconstruction and no rebuilding of lives can take place. Medicine, sanitation, hygiene, and crucial facilities that depend on water all suffer. More than 90% of the Gaza strip’s water is undrinkable. The rest is quickly running out. Just one fresh water source exists today and even this water is unfit to drink. Contaminated water is causing several illnesses including, renal failure, high blood pressure and osteoporosis. Most families spend a bulk of their earnings on contaminated water. The grim water statistics are part of a recent UN report on Gaza, which says the strip will become uninhabitable by 2020.
The Gaza Strip suffers from severe salinity of water. SKT Welfare has focused its efforts on providing a safe and clean long term water supply for the Palestinian citizens. The water desalination plant will convert saline water into fresh drinkable water. In the Gaza Strip, twenty desalination plants were completely destroyed, affecting 700,000 people. This project wilt restore hope amongst the residents of Gaza who currently travel several miles to collect water. The water desalination plant will be located in the Al Moare area in Gaza. The residents of Al-Moare have no accessible public water well within 4km of their homes. With your support, the water plant will benefit around 70.000 people with 50,000 liters of water being supplied each day. There will also be 10 water tanks installed to store water in the same location. Theproject will cost SKT Welfare£50,000 in set up and installation. It will then require £30,000 per year to maintain the water system.
