During my 2019 season playing American Football for the East Kilbride Pirates I’ve decided to raise awareness for SAMH (Scottish Association of Mental Health) - a charity that means a lot to me, my friends and family.
Throughout the season, I will be donating £100 per touchdown, £50 per interception and £25 per every 10 tackles from my own income to SAMH. Please help motivate me and support this cause by making a donation to support this great cause too.
Many people feel judged and scared at the result of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and many others. 46% of males admitted to being ‘embarrassed’ to admit to having mental health issues. An investigation within the NFL showed that players who had sustained three or more concussions were 3x more likely to have clinical Depression. And with a statistic of 46% admitting to be embarrassed, the scale of athletes, not just male, hiding mental health issues to maintain a ‘tough’ image is staggering. It costs just £20 for a session with a member of SAMH to listen and talk to someone and help them through their problems. Any penny can go a long way to saving a life.
Thank you for taking the time to read this story and remember, it’s okay to not be okay.
