Story
I have decided to undertake a challenge in aid of Young Lives vs Cancer for this year’s World Cancer Day, I will be giving up my biggest love for 10 days….CHOCOLATE. Honestly this is a real big deal for me and I am feeling very nervous right now. I’ll be giving it up from 4-14 February, but if we smash my fundraising target I will do an extra 10 days!!!
I am a proud ambassador of Young Lives Vs Cancer, having been diagnosed with cancer as a baby and I really hope to raise some money and awareness of childhood cancer and help others in similar positions. Support from Young Lives vs Cancer makes a huge difference to young cancer patients and their families; their specialist social workers are there from the moment of diagnosis with emotional and financial support. They help young people and families access grants and benefits, and liaise with schools and employers, as well as being someone to talk to when they need a shoulder to cry on. The charity’s Homes from Home also offer a free place to stay nearby the hospital so families can be together.
I know so many people are struggling with the cost of living crisis this winter. But right now, for children, young people and families facing cancer, household budgets are at breaking point. I am hearing stories of how families facing cancer are having to find, on average, an extra £730 a month just to cover everyday essentials. And as winter continues, any savings are being whittled away.
This means families facing cancer aren’t just facing impossible choices: they have no option but to go without - without vital treatment because they can’t afford to get to hospital. Without hot, healthy meals because of rising food prices. Without heating because it's too expensive to turn on the radiator.
This is why I have chosen to support team Young Lives this World Cancer Day, I appreciate money is tight for everyone right now so if you didn’t feel able to donate maybe you would consider undertaking a challenge too – you can find more details about signing up here - https://bit.ly/RyanWCD. Thank you.
