We raise funds to enhance all students' experience at SDCC

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I’m raising money for South Dartmoor Community College’s outdoor education department, so that they can enable all students, regardless of financial situation, to have access to the Ten Tors and the  Duke of Edinburgh award. The cost of entrance fees and equipment can be prohibitive for many students.

In my work as a teacher, and as a parent of a child at South Dartmoor Community College, I can see how much children need these kind of challenges - education which is beyond formal/classroom education. Education which is often hard to quantify in statistics, but valuable beyond words. Education which reveals qualities of wonder, team work, resourcefulness, courage, deep knowledge, problem solving, resolve, joy, which the young person may otherwise have never realised. These experiences must not only be accessible to those who can afford it.

For me, this challenge takes me out of my comfort zone. Dartmoor looks welcoming on a clear day, but the weather often changes and the landscape can quickly shape shift and become a very different place to navigate. Meeting new people and quickly forming a team (although actually, this is more worrying when thinking about it beforehand, as they are all lovely!), lots of training walks, a new weekly running routine for general fitness, carrying a heavy pack, navigating to a timed schedule, being self sufficient over night in the wild… it’s exciting, but does also make me feel a bit apprehensive!

I would be so honoured to receive any amount of sponsorship on behalf of South Dartmoor Community College, to enable ALL their students to experience challenges in the great outdoors.
