Story
I am making an attempt at the Great North Run for the first time this year!
No surprises that I have chosen to run for a skin related charity and have chosen DebRA.
DebRA is the national charity working on behalf of people affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB)- a rare incurable genetic condition which causes the skin to blister and shear at the slightest friction or even spontaneously. In its most severe form it is fatal in infancy and can cause fatal skin cancer in young adults. In its mildest form it can cause lifelong disability and pain.
DebRA receives no government funding and relies on the generosity of the public to carry out its vital work, improving lives and giving hope. 5000 people in the have EB and about 500 000 worldwide
For more info and to view a short video clip showing the reality of living with EB please visit http://www.debra.org.uk/. PLEASE give generously and thank you for your support. This is Hollie's StoryHollie was born on 12th March 2004 with Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa.
Like any other little girl, Hollie loves to dance, play and have fun. But if Hollie bumps herself or her clothes rub, her skin blisters and comes away. When it occurs in her mouth or throat she struggles to eat or drink until the pain dies down.
Every morning, Hollie's dressings need to be removed, her blisters lanced and fresh bandages applied. This has to be repeated in the evening, before bed. This is an extremely painful process. To try and reduce Hollie's distress, her mum dyes her bandages a variety of colours to co-ordinate with her daughter's outfits.
Without DebRA's support, Hollie could not live her life to the full.
