Story
Fisher House is a "home away from home" for military patients and their families on the site of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Fisher House opened in 2013 and has since offered free accommodation for thousands of military patients and their families.
Through my volunteering with the cadets I first heard about Fisher House when helping at the BRMB Walkathon in 2010. I was then reunited with this great cause back in 2017 at a WI charity fundraising evening held in our local village club prompting me to raise a small amount for them during my first ever half marathon in October 2017.
Since then a connection between Fisher House and Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing Air Cadets has grown with many individual squadrons undertaking fundraising for this great cause. I have also recently changed jobs and now work at University Hospitals Birmingham and often get to hear first hand the great work that the team are doing.
For many people in the world unless you have a close connection with the military they may not understand just how active our boys and girls are until there hear it on the news and often forget they are doing a great job to protect us and allow us to go about our daily lives. Therefore we want to do our bit and give back to those that have suffered life changing injuries or illness whilst serving our country.
