Story
Auryel Butmaro was the most loving husband, Brother, Uncle, Dad, Grandad, Great Grandad and friend – devastatingly taken far too soon by pancreatic cancer on 12th September 2022.
After numerous hospital appointments and stays, Auryel’s strength and resolve was tested repeatedly and often he was disappointed by the treatment he had received to date – but Auryel never complained, he battled and fought with every ounce of his being, he was so resilient. During his illness we were fortunate enough as a family to be able to enjoy a family clay shoot, walks and even watch Arsenal beat Sevilla 6-0 at the Emirates.
As his condition worsened Auryel chose to stay at Severn Hospice in Telford as he was in so much pain, something the specialists promised would not happen. We didn’t know what to expect from a hospice, you automatically assume the worst and worry. Upon arrival to the hospice, every single member of staff were warm and welcoming to both him and his family and their onsite doctors and nurses quickly got Auryel’s pain under control.
The hospice allowed us to watch every single Arsenal game with him in his room, they cooked meals for Deb and Auryel to enjoy together, Amanda, the craft lady and him had a laugh over the football and often bantered, they allowed his dog poppy to visit him, he had a proper bed and chair he could be comfortable in and get out of, the gardens were immaculate and allowed him to walk and sit with family and friends in a tranquil environment and most importantly he was treated with warmth and love. Auryel was given his smile back and on his 70th birthday, they had prepared everything to allow him to come home and be with his family – this meant to the world to him, and to us.
Words cannot fully describe the gratitude we all feel towards the hospice and its staff, but we have pledged to raise funds and awareness to show our gratitude. Auryel also spoke about the importance of raising awareness about the silent killer, pancreatic cancer, which we also aim to do for him.
David and Nicola are running the TCS London Marathon 2023 together on behalf of Severn Hospice, in memory of Auryel and the family will do some joint fundraising activities to support our fundraising goals.
The hospice relies solely on donations from the public to fund its incredible work, you never know when you or someone you love will need to use these services.
Please support us by sharing, donating, raising awareness and by keeping Auryel in your thoughts.
