Story

Running WITH Alex!

Running TOGETHER !

Running for FAMILIES!

This is a very special marathon for us this year as we will be running this one all together (with Alexander in his wheelchair!) Its going to be quite a challenge as Alexander and his chair weigh about 42 kg (that's about 6.5 stone!!)  So if you are in Brighton on Sunday 15th April come and give us a cheer as we are planning to dressing up for the occasion!

WE’RE RUNNING FOR AMAZE ...

Help us make a difference to the lives of disabled children and their families.

Our son, Alexander was born with multiple congenital heart defects, amongst other things, requiring him to have four lifesaving open heart operations within the first five months of his life. As he got older further conditions were diagnosed including learning difficulties, hearing loss, speech and palate difficulties, eye problems and immune deficiencies, and as a result we spend a considerable amount of time in hospitals and developmental centres.  Over the years we have met with many Consultants, Doctors, Therapists, Specialists and teachers and sometimes  it can be bewildering and overwhelming!  We have met a lot of incredibly gifted people along this journey who have helped Alexander become the incredible, inspirational little boy that he is today.

We’ve received years of support and care from the services of AMAZE and felt it was time to give something back to the dedicated group of professionals and volunteers, that have spent so much time helping us to live life to the full.  Alexander’s own personal fight for survival never fails to be a huge inspiration to those that meet him, and certainly keeps us going on this long and very personal journey. Alexander is one of the fortunate ones, there are many of friends that did not make it.  Please help us to make the lives of families like us worth the fight.

What an Amazing charity!

Having a disabled child is like opening a door to an alternative reality, a world that runs parallel to the ‘real’ one, that you did not know existed until that moment.

We found that the people we knew before we had Alexander were no longer able to relate to us and very quickly they fell by the wayside as they realised Alexander might not ever fully 'recover' from his difficulties.  It becomes very difficult to exist in the ‘normal’ world of healthy children, the comparisons came to be too painful and over time we became isolated by our experiences.

Through the help of AMAZE families like ours receive invaluable help, advice and support from this parent-led charity.  Many of the families have often had similar situations and experiences to us and are increasingly the most qualified to offer practical advice and support.  This invaluable information gave us the confidence to get out there and live fully and inclusively in the world around us.

AMAZE is a one stop shop, offering independent information, advice and support to parents and carers of disabled children to live fully socially included lives.  Our organisation is parent led and works with parent carers of children with any special need or disability aged 0 - 19 years.  We aim to empower parents by supporting them through the emotional and practical demands of getting the right services, whether these are finance, education health or leisure for their child.  Services include telephone helplines, volunteers who work individually with parents on education issues and benefits claims, publications, workshops and much more.

'I think that the service that Amaze offers is outstanding and I would have been lost without it.'
