Story
It’s that time of year again….. Fundraising time!!
I’ll be running the RunGMC 24 hour relay again this year on the 24th and 25th June. This is a 4 mile loop starting from the Exhibition pub in Godmanchester, through the village, around Port Holme and back again. Each year the event raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support by encouraging anyone to donate £5.00 to run each loop and is arranged by Joe and Jessica from the Godmanchester Running Club.
Many people run several loops taking in the sunset, sun rise or even just a spooky midnight run. I will however intend to run at least 25 laps totalling 100 miles within the 24 hour period
Although I have donated my £5.00 per loop to Macmillan Cancer Support I’m looking at raising funds specifically for the E10
Haematology Day Unit at Addenbrookes Hospital via sponsorship from you lovely lot. This is the ward where my mum currently visits for her own chemotherapy, blood transfusions and other procedures.
They are desperate for funding as the current unit has run out of space to treat the numerous people suffering from multi myeloma, leukaemia or one of the other 138 different types of blood cancer that exist. I have experienced first-hand the long lines of people waiting for treatment and even people having these exhausting treatments in the corridors or general waiting rooms due to the lack of space.
The good news in that a perfect new space has been found, putting a solution in reach. But first it needs a complete refurbishment. While the cost of the basic works are being met by the NHS, the vision is to go beyond basic. The hospital team takes pride in offering patients a warm, welcoming experience, extra comforts and access to the latest equipment to ensure the very best standard of care. Patients spend long hours in the centre, often over many months. The quality of their surroundings can make a dramatic difference to day to day well-being and long term recovery.
So, with your help, a light spacious new centre could be ready for patients later this year allowing the vacated space to focus on other blood disorders and treatments.
Please spare what you can for a cause very close to my heart and feel free to come down on the day or night to offer encouragement, support and maybe join in for a lap.
All the best- Darren.
