19th July 2022 whilst at work I found out that my partner Hanna had been in a serious car accident, no fault of her own in a different country. After being in a coma for 2 weeks she pulled through. At the time her TBI(Traumatic Brain Injury) was severe and we were unsure of how she would pull through and what her quality of life would be afterwards. Hanna suffered from around 22 broken bones in total including 3 skull fractures as well as puncturing both lungs
Hanna is a fighter and at the time of writing this almost 7 months to the day since the accident she's recovering miraculously. She has therapy, rehab and speech therapy on a regular basis. Hanna is relentless with her recovery and seeing her progress and slowly get back to her best is amazing. There is still a long road ahead but seeing the progress so far we're hoping her recovery will be as close to 100% as possible
Not everyone has the same success story unfortunately and many individuals have it worse and the recovery can be slow without much progress. My goal with fundraising for this run is to raise awareness and funding for more research and investment in rehabilitation equipment and methods
1 in 3 people will have an Acquired Brain Injury at some point in their lives - we want to help give people the best possible chance of recovery. SameYou works to increase access to recovery for young adults after leaving hospital and to facilitate innovations in specialist nurse training, fund clinical research and develop evidence for policy change. Our long-term vision is to work with neurorehabilitation leaders to develop a blueprint for a new type of neuro-recovery centre helping people find their way to recovery.
