Story
We have created the ‘Run For One’ Campaign to raise £30,000 to fund a Head Coach to be based full-time in a school for a year.
What Your Money Goes Towards Supporting
For many children and young people, the most important role models are their parents and caregivers – but they can also be Greenhouse Coaches. Children look up to our coaches to help shape how they behave in school, in relationships, or when making difficult decisions. When a child follows the example of any adult, they will pick up habits and perspectives that could last a lifetime – therefore their role models must be positive ones. This is incredibly important when it comes to young people who’ve experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). ACEs include all types of abuse and neglect as well as parental mental illness, substance use, divorce, incarceration, and domestic violence. The effects of these can be catastrophic, and can even shorten life expectancy by up to 20 years.
Why Sport?
Sport is an incredible vehicle to teach life skills. Sport can combat lack of opportunity to less fortunate children. It has been proven that Greenhouse Coaches enhance educational attainment, keeps young people engaged with school, and improves mental health, reducing depression and anxiety and increasing self-esteem. Provision that appeals to young people is becoming increasingly vital for children growing up in London. What Greenhouse has, through its sports programmes, is accessibility, an appeal to young people, and an ability to provide a route out of gang violence and youth crime.
Every child deserves a fair chance to succeed no matter what their background is.
