Story
I am running my first half marathon in memory of Mia my daughter. On 30th January 2021 our lives changed forever when Mia was killed in a road traffic accident.
Mia was a real go-getter. She loved a challenge, took part in a variety of sports, encouraged and loved all those around.
Mia played as a goal keeper for Horsham Hockey Club. She gave her all and always had a smile on her face what ever the weather or score. She would always be there with an encouraging word on and off the sports field.
Mia also played as a goal keeper for Collyers Sixth Form College and was part of the Sussex County team.
Mia was also a member of Horsham Triathlon Club. She was best known for running round the track and talking throughout.
Mia had also been part of Atlantis Swimming Club for a number of years and Sparrows Football Club when she was younger.
Mia loved sport but it was expensive and sometimes we couldn't afford to buy the equipment. We were fortunate enough to be able to borrow kit and then buy it when we could afford it. Not every child or young person is as lucky as Mia was. They aren't able to borrow equipment, or save up for it so that's why I am running a half marathon. .
We as a family have set up a charity in Mia's name. The purpose of the charity is to raise money to help children and young people access sport. It could be to help pay for football boots, swimming floats, wet suits, hockey goal keeper kits - whatever the sporting need we want to be able to help.
Access to sport helps children and young people thrive, it gives them confidence and helps their mood. Being part of a team can help a young person feel accepted and less isolated in a world where they may feel alone and ignored.
Anyone that knew Mia, or met her, knew that she was blessed with a happiness that radiated from her. Her happiness was infectious. Mia would have loved the idea of the charity. She would want us to find a way to help other children and young people thrive so please sponsor me.
