Story
As many of you will know, over the past 3 years I have been coming to terms with 'losing' my mum, as I knew her, to dementia. It is a heartbreaking disease to watch take hold of someone you love. Having now had personal experience, I have been shocked to find out how little is still known about dementia (in part because there are over 100 different types and the age of those affected ranges from toddlers to the elderly and everything in between) and how little treatment there is available. The increasing prevalence means that the sad reality is that the majority of us will come into contact with it via friends or family, if we haven't already.
I have been looking for a challenge to enable me to raise some money for one of the dementia charities and last week (whilst on holiday) I spotted that the that the Alzheimer's Society where setting a challenge to run 100 miles in a month. In January I started the couch to 5K and despite having developed a love/hate relationship with running ever since, this seemed like the perfect challenge. The 100 mile (161 km) challenge essentially means that I have to 5.75 km every single day (40.25 km/week) for a month. To put into context, the furthest I had run before last week was 35 km in a week (once!), so it should definitely be a challenge!
Anyway, enough of my waffle, I would be very grateful to anyone who is happy to donate and help keep me motivated on my dark morning runs over the next 3 weeks (I've completed 1 week already, phew!).
Thank you.
