Story

My name is Jack and I’m running the Plymouth Half Marathon in memory of my Dad, Phil Pope. The event takes place on Father’s Day, June 19th.

Dad was diagnosed with a form of cancer called leukaemia in October of 2021, following this he had been through various treatments to fight the illness, he unfortunately became very ill with pneumonia and sadly passed away on April 18th.

For two weeks the fantastic staff at the Penrose Ward (an intensive care ward at Derriford Hospital) provided fantastic treatment for Dad, they gave him a fighting chance and tried everything they possibly could. The doctors, nurses and all of the hospital staff were fantastic for my Dad, and the entire family - they treated him with dignity and respect, and provided fantastic care and communication throughout this time.

Spring Intensive Care is a charity that improves the care of critically ill patients and their relatives treated in Penrose and Pencarrow ward, Derriford Hospital, Plymouth by funding the purchase of state of the art equipment, supporting education and training and promoting research.
