Story
Every year, more than 11,000 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour. They’re complex, hard to cure and have a devastating impact on the lives of those diagnosed, and their family and friends. They can strike anyone, at any age. And they strike fast!
In August 2021 Paddy, my best friend and husband, was diagnosed with a Grade 4 Glioblastoma Brain Tumour. We had less than 10 months together after his diagnosis...and these were a very difficult and sometimes traumatic 10 months. Paddy loved life (and cake!) (and our chickens!). He had a knack of making you believe anything was possible. He was funny, brave and hugely inspiring. He even had treatment on our wedding day!
The Challenge
This July, I am taking part in a 50 mile race along the Wales Coast Path to raise awareness and funds for The Brain Tumour Charity in memory of my unforgettable husband. I have chosen an ultra because Paddy loved running really (really) long distances. I always said he was daft. He always said that one day I would be daft enough to run one too - I guess he was right!
I have a long, hard journey ahead; with lots of training and lots of miles to run, including a 34-mile qualification race (completed last December). But I will run every one of those steps knowing that Paddy is there with me.
The Dragon 50 Challenge Stats
- Distance: 50 miles / 81 kilometres
- Elevation: 4200ft /1300m
- Cut off time: 16.5 Hours

* The Extra Challenge - Snowdon By Night 2023
As a warm up ahead of the ultra, on Saturday June 17th, I am climbing the highest peak in Wales (Snowdon) with the Brain Tumour Charity. And its a whopping 1085m high!
As well as testing my endurance and hill climbing capabilities, we will be setting off in the early evening, making the journey to the summit to watch the sun set (another firm Paddy favourite activity) before making the return trip to base in the dark. Whilst its important to make it to the top and back down again, its even more important to raise awareness and help those affected by brain tumours live longer, better lives.
