Story
Dear friends,
A HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who have sponsored us and supported us! Thank you for all your useful advice and practical help before the event, for phoning and texting on the night, and of course for helping us reach and exceed our target. All your good wishes and support have meant so much to us, and the money you have contributed is important to everybody affected by breast cancer.
So... how did it all go?
It was a fantastic experience. On leaving Bath Station by train we saw a rainbow; such a lovely start to our journey. When we arrived in London we saw more and more women in pink Moonwalk bra t-shirts and pink caps, and at one point the tube escalator was one long pink line.
Then our arrival at Hyde Park! A huge pink tent with thousands of women in their decorated bras. Some men also took part; they looked hilarious in their bras. Good on them! The music on stage was great and the whole atmosphere felt very up-beat.
We started the walk just before midnight. Striding out with thousands of other people brought such a rush of energy... the first 5 miles flew past. Walking through London by night was fabulous: Hyde Park, the beautiful Thames with all its reflecting lights, the sparkling London Eye, the imposing Houses of Parliament, St. Pauls Cathedral and Buckingham Palace. Cars were beeping their horns and drivers cheering and waving at us.
One really kind restaurant manager let us use the loo before locking up. We ate Ruhi's delicious sandwiches, kept our energy up with chocolate and fruit, and walked and walked and walked.
Our feet became increasingly sore as the night wore on, and the soles seemed to burn; our trainers felt as though they were made of thin cloth and we could feel every single bone in our feet. Having not slept since the previous night made the whole effort so much harder, and by 4am the thought of the long miles that remained ahead didn't feel so great.
But there was so much to be thankful for: we had each other's support; the weather was good - no rain!! (a big thank you to all the weather gods); walking through the night into the sunrise was a unique experience; the organisation of the whole event ran smoothly and there was a great sense of common purpose.
It took us just over 9 hours to walk the Moonwalk. We felt immense relief and achievement as we received our medals, and silently thanked our feet for bringing us to the end of this long walk in spite of the cruelty we had inflicted on them. As we finished it started to rain... good timing. We made our way to Paddington Station and had the best mug of coffee and breakfast ever.
So thank you all again!
Love from Ruhi and Karin xx
