Many of you have seen me in various plays and short films over the years, and I have received phenomenal support from all quarters throughout this time. The aim of this page, however, is to enable me to take the next step forward in my career through some much needed financial support.

Over the past few months I have been traveling up and down to London attending numerous auditions for a place on a postgraduate study program, and I have (finally) decided to accept a place to study on the 1-year Masters in Professional Acting course at ALRA (See left for further information).

Since the age of five I have held a strong passion for the arts, starting with coercing my playground buddies into putting on short plays that I had written, to joining the local youth theatres and amateur dramatics, to attaining my degree in Drama and Theatre Arts at Queen Margaret University, to finally receiving professional work within the dramatic community.

This journey sadly has not been an easy one, as I have battled for many years with prolonged periods of depression. As I’m sure many of you have had experience with - either first or second hand - this illness has enormously debilitating effects on a person’s self-esteem and energy levels, and it is this factor that prevented me from doing my Ba in performance when I left high school.
Coping with this illness on a daily basis has been an exhausting struggle, but over the last couple of years things have really started to come together for me, and now I want to pursue that dream I held as a small child and give the tempestuous world of acting my best shot.

Attending the auditions and selecting a course was only the first step, however, and now I need your help in order to make this dream come true.

The money raised on this page will go towards paying for my not insubstantial tuition fees. Unfortunately due to the intensity of the training, it will be difficult to have a job for the duration of the course, a fact that will have a considerable impact on my financial position, and so I am also seeking to raise funds to help support myself for this period.

All of the money raised here will save me from years of debt trying to pay back the loans that I will otherwise have to take out to finance this venture (debt that will be incredibly difficult to repay due to the fact that the average annual earnings of the British actor are around £9,000!)

I know this is not your regular charity, and I know it was my choice to put myself through this, but drama is something I am passionate about, not just for the enjoyment I get out of it, but for what it brings to others as well, so please any amount you can spare, no matter how big or small, will help me find a way to finally attain my dream.

Thank you

Rowan

How your money will actively help me:

£5  - will buy a play-script
£10 – will buy me a course book
£20 – will buy me equipment and clothing suitable for my training
£25 – will pay for my oyster card for a week (that’s my travel to and from school)
£30 - will pay a gas bill, an electricity bill, or even an educational trip to the theatre
£50 - will feed me for a week
£100 - will pay for my accommodation for a week

And hey, if you’re feeling really generous, £12,000 should about cover my tuition fees for the whole year!

About the charity

ALRA (The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts ) is recognised in the acting industry for producing highly professional actors who are passionate about their craft, and although we teach all aspects of live and recorded performance we are known for offering an exemplary training in screen acting. ALRA is an established member of the Conference of Drama Schools and it is our policy to nurture the students' strengths and individual qualities. The main source of funding for ALRA students is the Dance and Drama Award. These grants dramatically reduce tuition fees but are only available to 60% of the students. Those not in receipt of a DaDa are expected to find their tuition fees and living expenses independently, which can often make the course unaffordable. Another financial difficulty is that none of our students is eligible for student loans. As a result, most work at weekends and during holidays in an attempt to supplement their income. As it is extremely difficult to meet the costs of living in London they inevitably resort to taking out substantial bank loans. Financial pressure is an unwelcome distraction which causes students' work to suffer. You can help ALRA students to fulfil their dreams by making a donation today!
