This August I will begin the challenge of cycling from Melksham to Monte Carlo to raise money for Cancer Research. The journey consists of riding to Southampton, getting the ferry then continuing through the length of France, a total of 1348Km, over a nine day period. This means that I will be riding the approximate distance between Bristol and Birmingham every day of the ride. Not to mention two days climbing the Alps.
My motivations for undertaking this ride largely rest on the fantastic progress made by Cancer Research UK each year. Every day 400 people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer, and the work of CRUK ensures the survival rates continue to improve. Knowing the money raised will make a difference will fuel me physically and mentally throughout the ride. Every mile completed, and every contribution given will help.
I will be one of five novices, joining a team of 43 experienced riders. Until two months ago I had never been on a road bike, and the first time I used clip in shoes I fell off five times in an hour. I now however have a bike, a lower crash rate and am training whenever possible therefore those based in Bath and Birmingham look out for me!
In addition to improving my fitness, learning how to ride in a peleton and eating over 6000 calories per day, my training has made me aware of the less obvious problems I may encounter. For a ride of this size, saddle sore is a key concern. As a result I plan to take a range of saddles, a litre of chamois cream and be prepared to wear multiple pairs of padded cycling shorts. Therefore if nothing else, please sponsor my bum as i'm convinced that by the end of the ride, sitting in a conventional manner will not be an option for me.
Thank you for reading this page, I hope you agree that this is a fantastic cause. I mean it when I say that any amount of sponsorship would be truly appreciated.
