Story
On the 30th September, a team of us are attempting to row two cornish pilot gigs around the Isle of Wight. The distance is c.58miles (or just a shade under 3 times across the channel....!!) and is likely to take 12+ hours depending on weather and tides. This is all to raise money for Jemima, a little girl with cerebal palsy so that she can go to America for an operation that will significantly improve the quality of her life.
Message from Jemima
Hello ! My name is Jemima and I am 5 years old. I was born prematurely and suffered a brain injury at birth leading me to be diagnosed with spastic quadraplegia (a form of cerebral palsy). My muscles are too tight so I find it hard to move and need help with everything. I really want to be more independent and walk better so I can keep up with my brothers and my friends.
I have just been accepted for life changing surgery in the U.S. It is called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). The surgeon will identify and cut nerves in my spine which are sending the wrong messages to my legs. With intense rehabilitation I can then hopefully walk, stand and sit much better. This would mean I could play, learn and do many things all on my own.
It is going to be a massive challenge for me and my family but with lots of support I am sure we can do it. Every little step counts !
Love Jemima
