Starlight Mission
We use the power of play to make the experience of illness and treatment better for children and their families.
Protectors of Play. Childhood is a crucial time in everyone’s development and, when illness intervenes, it’s of critical importance to protect it.
It’s when we begin to discover the things that shape our nature and start to acquire the knowledge that makes us who we are. It is a precious rite of passage in the life of every human being. Childhood is also typically a time of positivity, no matter what life brings our way.
Those golden years that we cherish should be as carefree, fun and unconditional as possible for every child. It’s every child’s time to play.
At Starlight, we are passionate about protecting this time of play.
Championing its importance and defending every child’s right to it. Our
passion takes us to the bedsides of some of the most poorly children in the UK. In hospital, often without hope of leaving. We use the power of play to create a sense of escape from the difficult reality in which these children find themselves. To delight and distract. To entertain and enlighten. But, most of all, to restore a smile to their faces. Making moments of light when the day is at its darkest.
Play is important. Play is invaluable. Play is vital.
For every child that needs us
There are 100,000 children with life-threatening illnesses in the UK and due to the pandemic over the last 12 months, children's wards have been taken over by Coronavirus treatment, and children have been moved to new wards, with new nurses and new faces, at a time they are already feeling overwhelmed and scared.
Social distancing is happening in hospitals and visiting times have been reduced sometimes to as little as one parent for an hour a day.
With your help Starlight can provide frontline NHS health workers with the tools and and resources to alleviate anxiety, stress and loneliness for seriously ill children through the power of play.
