Story
One of the joys of living is being able to look back with fondness on the fun times you've had with friends and family, memories that cheer and sustain you in trickier times.
Alzheimer's Disease is a form of Dementia that amongst other things robs you of this ability to make new memories - in fact it's a sustained, debilitating degeneration over time that renders short term memory making and rational behaviour an impossibility.
It's only when you witness the implications of this first hand that you realise what a heart breaking illness it really is.
As most of you know, my mum has suffered from Alzheimer's for over 15 years now, and during that time she has gone from being a strong, intelligent, independent, determined woman, to a frightened, tormented, confused and much diminished old lady, who has had her dignity, sanity and independence completely eroded over that time.
I'm doing this walk to help raise funds and awareness of this tragic illness that robbed me of my mum long ago, even though her body is still comparatively strong, and every so often ( though much less often these days) I can manage to get her to raise a smile, albeit briefly, by taking her favourite yellow flowers.
You're right, 10k isn't a big challenge for a fit bod like me, but helping to find a cure for the disease is.
This is a cause very close to my heart and affects more and more people every day as we all live longer, so please pledge what you can, however little.
Thank you so much
