At just 5 days old, my daughter Hannah was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. Being told there was a chance she may die is a moment we'll never forget.

There is no vaccine for the type of meningitis she had (E. coli).

Luckily it was caught early, thanks to a hunch on my part that something wasn't right (she'd been very fussy the night before) but also to the diligence of Connie, a maternity support worker within the NHS, who was fortuitously paying us a visit for our 5 day postpartum check.

Hannah's only symptoms pre-diagnosis were a mild but increasing fever, and slightly raised fontanel. She never developed a rash.

She has profound  hearing loss in one ear and moderate loss in the other. She heals has vestibular hypofunction (lack of balance).

Hannah is an amazing person. She loves art, music and dancing and is flourishing into a kind and tenacious 8 year old.
