Story
On Sunday 25th September 2016, the Dhesi family (Arvi, Rosie, Alexander, Elinor and Lucas) will be walking 10k in London with hundreds of other families with children living with Type 1 Diabetes.
Elinor was diagnosed with Type 1 when she was 6 years old. Type 1 is a life-long and life-threatening condition for which there is currently no cure.
Elinor's pancreas does not produce insulin and she has to manage her blood glucose levels by doing finger-prick blood tests and insulin injections at least 5 times a day.
JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund) supports essential research into the causes of Type 1 and developments in treatment.
The money we raise will help to support the many exciting research projects that JDRF currently funds, including
Smart insulin
Glucose-responsive or smart insulins would provide a person with type 1 diabetes with all of their insulin needs in a single daily dose, eliminating the need for finger prick testing, carb counting and meal-time injections. To do this, the drug would circulate in the body, turning on when it's needed and off when it's not.
Artificial pancreas
The artificial pancreas is a piece of technology that would do the job of a healthy pancreas. By combining an insulin pump, a continuous glucose monitor and a computer program it can calculate how much insulin is needed, then deliver it automatically. Trials have found it offers much better glucose control overnight, without increasing the risk of hypos (low blood glucose).
Encapsulation
The encapsulation programme is developing implantable devices that contain the insulin-producing beta cells that people with type 1 have lost. These capsules would allow the beta cells to act as they would in a healthy pancreas, constantly sensing a person’s glucose levels and producing insulin as needed, while being protected from further immune attack.
