With the incredible support of Rosie Connolly’s handbag raffle and the generosity of her friends and followers across Ireland, a total of €275,434.57 was raised, which was put to work in both CHI at Crumlin and Temple Street and has made a real and lasting difference for sick children from all over the country. This vital funding has changed the lives of children. It made it possible to invest in a whole range of supports in both hospitals including vital equipment, ground-breaking research, parental and patient supports and redevelopment. Below are just two examples of essential equipment and patient supports that this phenomenal fundraising have helped to make possible:
Paediatric Visual Electrophysiology System: This piece of equipment in CHI at Crumlin is vital to perform diagnostic and tumour monitoring on children with tumours of the optic nerve, children with acquired and inherited visual difficulties and neurology patients and replaces an existing system that was more than twelve years old and had reached the end of its life. There are approximately fifty children with optic nerve tumours who require on-going visual testing to monitor their condition and over 200 children attend the department every year for visual testing, from young babies to teenagers. This equipment is used to help identify the cause of blindness and visual disorders in children and has an essential role in monitoring children with optic nerve tumours in CHI at Crumlin.
Seasonal Events and Saturday Club – Being in hospital can be a difficult and stressful time for children. CHI at Temple Street is committed to providing a home-away-from-home, family and patient-centred environment for all children and adolescents who come to the hospital, led by the Play Department and funded through Children’s Health Foundation. The Saturday Club is a programme of Saturday entertainment for in-patients, including arts and crafts, sensory toys and children’s entertainers, which all help bring joy and laughter to children and young people on the wards. A whole host of seasonal events and activities, decoration and fun are made possible around the hospital to lift spirits and create a fun, enjoyable experience for children in hospital. These events are held all year round in CHI at Temple Street - from St. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Easter to Halloween, Christmas and much more besides!
