Story
What happened?
Last year, I was accepted to study a Masters at Oxford University that would start in September 2020. It was a dream come true.
Sadly, it was not meant to be. Two weeks before my course, I was diagnosed with a condition called Keratoconus.
What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a disease that involves the progressive thinning and bending of my cornea.
The disease is in both of my eyes, but in particular I lost 35-40% of my vision in my left eye. The lasting effect it has on me is double vision, ghosting and irregular astigmatism. Here is how it looks like:
Had I not been diagnosed in September, I would have lost 80% of my vision by the end of the year. In extreme cases, some go blind.
Why RNIB Oxford Half-Marathon 2021?
After my diagnosis, I undertook a procedure called collagen cross-linking (CXL) to prevent further deterioration. While the preceding vision loss remains permanent, Dr. Alfred Leung was instrumental in helping me overcome this condition and face my new reality.
My recovery would not have been possible without him, along with the invaluable support I received from friends, colleagues and family.
Finally, my postgraduate dream remains alive and (literally) running thanks to the generous support of the Kwok Scholars Association and Oxford University.
I therefore can't think of a better way to pay it forward than to raise money for the Royal National Institute of Blind People as I run the Oxford Half-Marathon.
Why donate?
After keratoconus, the half-marathon represents my biggest mental and physical hurdle of 2021. Finishing the race, in Oxford, will not only symbolise how things have come full circle, but also a mark a personal triumph over adversity.
This run strikes a deep personal chord, and my gratitude for how things have turned out serves as my undying source of motivation. As such, there is absolutely no question that I will see this race through to the finish line.
The cause is not just about me - Every day 250 people start to lose their sight. I am supporting RNIB because they help people who have lost their sight find their lives again. By providing emotional support and expert advice, RNIB enables those with vision loss to live and enjoy everyday life.
