The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice looked after my father in 2001, making his last days the best they could be before he passed away on 6th June.
Tragically last Christmas their services were called upon again to look after Philesta during her last days at home. They provided the help and support for Philesta to enjoy one last Christmas at home with her loving children. Sadly passing away on 2nd January, brutally quickly from a very aggressive cancer. The support from the Phyllis Tuckwell enabled Philesta to remain in the comfort and familiar surroundings of her own home. With friends and family popping in for a chat, and with the family always there a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere pervaded, surprisingly so under the circumstance.
Phyllis Tuckwell also provided some excellent bereavement counseling as well.
So about the challenge.
I am setting off from Tilford on 6th June, the anniversary of my fathers death on my trusty bike with a couple of panniers on the back. For a 850 mile journey to St Tropez. It all looked down hill on the map when I first looked!
I am meeting up with Richard Hayward on route to Newhaven, where we catch a ferry to Dieppe. We cycle part of the Avenue Vert from Dieppe, a 'green' route from London to Paris for cyclists, before, heading through Champagne country, Burgundy, Beaujolais, skirting Cote de Rhone then Provence for some Rose. Well we need to keep hydrated with all that cycling!
We have seven days cycling to Geneva then a day off, where we will be joined by a few others on the last leg of the challenge. Continuing south on the Route Napoleon, a classic bike route through the mountains, the way Napoleon returned to Paris after being exiled on Elba, before turning right to sweep down to the Med. The shortest day is about 60 miles, the longest day just over 100 miles, the steepest day about 8500' up hill, including a 10 mile category one climb (that's cycle speak for, 'it's' going to hurt) over the Jura mountains.
