Story
Ellenor hospice is located in Gravesend and is the only hospice in Kent that provides its services to both children and adults. Services are provided at the patient's home, in the hospice and in care homes. In common with most hospices, ellenor was negatively affected by the pandemic, in particular through the restrictions on its ability to raise funds from the public during lockdowns and other restrictions on public gathering.
I have been a trustee of ellenor for six years and chair of trustees for most of that time. I have witnessed at first hand the incredible job that hospice staff and volunteers at ellenor and around the country do. Most hospices are only part funded by the government (usually around 30%) and rely on the generosity of their supporters for the rest of their funding. Raising the funds needed every year is a difficult task, especially at times of economic difficulty like those we are currently experiencing. With more funding, hospices could do so much more to help alleviate stress on the NHS.
Ellenor serves thousands of patients each year. Here is just one feedback message:
“I will never forget the support my family got from ellenor when they needed it most: “The nurses make that place magical because they are always there, and they are so lovely. They support everyone, young and old. They supported not just my mum when she was ill, but our whole family. I had music therapy, which was good. I don’t play instruments, really, but it didn’t matter - you can play whatever you want and get your emotions out, with no-one judging you.”
