Staff, alumni and students of Sheffield Hallam are fundraising in support of the Sanctuary Scholarships to help remove barriers faced by students seeking asylum in the UK.

Story

From the 23 to 26 September I will be canoeing 60 miles from Fort William to Inverness, accompanied by my good friend Brian, to raise money for the Sanctuary Scholarships as part of the Hallam Fund. Young asylum seekers have already overcome many challenges to find sanctuary in the UK, and they face further obstacles that prevent them from rebuilding their lives once they are here. Just like many young people in Britain, young asylum seekers may also want to go to university to pursue a brighter future. The Sanctuary Scholarships recognise the determination, aspirations and resilience of asylum seeking students, and their academic abilities and potential to succeed. The scholarships aim to remove the barriers facing asylum seeking students, so they have a real opportunity to make the most of what university can offer, regardless of their personal circumstances.
