Roger’s London to Brighton Unicycle Ride on the 16th July 2011 to help raise money for the Rett UK Charity.

Firstly, why unicycle between London and Brighton? Well, why not!

Actually there is a story behind this. Tom Fried wanted to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and decided that a good way to do this was to learn to ride a unicycle and ride it on their London to Brighton cycle ride this year. They turned around and said “you can’t”. Well after lots of pointless rankling from them he ended up saying “I will do it anyway”. Tom being very principled decided he would not do it on the same day as their ride and do it a month later on the 16th July. The unicycle community were so impressed with him that a group of about 20 of them decided to go and ride with him to show their support and also raise money for charities.

Why Rett?

I have a niece called Kerry. She is a lovely girl, but life is not easy for her as she has Rett. For those who don’t know, Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disorder affecting mainly female. It is present at birth and usually goes undetected until around one when major regression starts to occur (about 1 ½ years with Kerry). Acquired skills are gradually lost and the children suffer many complications such a scoliosis and epilepsy. The children often do not learn to speak or communicate. They need constant care through out their lives.

Rett UK offers support for the professionals, families and carers of Rett children. It offers everything from help with diagnosis through to family weekends away. I know from the help that this fantastic charity has done for kerry and her family that it is a very worthy cause. Please do donate.
