I always associated CHAS (Children’s Hospice Across Scotland) exclusively with buildings. But recently I became aware of the sterling work their community nurses do, in support of families with children suffering from longterm or terminal illness. As she cut my hair in her salon in Broadford (Scizzors), Ruth regaled me with stories of their willingness to go the extra mile for her and Peter’s son, Harris, whose cheerful resilience has proved such an inspiration to our church and community. With Lent approaching, I thought it might be time to give up hair again – and for which worthier cause than CHAS?

Last year, when I did something similar to raise funds for our twin church in the Middle East, a shop assistant in Kyle stopped me and said that shaving my head was no big deal. If I wanted to do something really impressive I should get my legs waxed! So that is exactly what I shall do if I hit my target of £1,000 before Easter…
