Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page, through which you can sponsor me online.

THE FEAT: From 2-7pm on April 26th several of the staff and friends of the Yoga Therapy Centre (including myself) will be performing a Yoga Marathon: 5 hours of postures, breathing exercises, yoga relaxation and meditation.

THE CHARITY: I founded the Yoga Biomedical Trust in 1983 in order to help develop yoga as a complementary therapy. Having, myself, been cured of asthma by yoga, and seen several other chronic conditions helped by yoga, I was convinced that yoga could make important contributions to healthcare. I wanted to use my research skills (from my earlier career as a scientist) to help counterbalance the mechanistic emphasis of modern medicine by introducing consciousness-based approaches. The Yoga Biomedical Trust brings traditional yoga and modern medicine together, drawing on the best of each to work towards a new synthesis for the benefit of all.

The Yoga Biomedical Trust is now based at the Yoga Therapy Centre in central London. We want this to become an international centre of excellence for yoga therapy. In addition to providing yoga therapy to people with health problems, and general yoga to the local community, we have established a widely-recognised diploma course for training yoga therapists, and are involved in research and development of yoga therapy for diabetes and for low back pain. We helped set up the British Council for Yoga Therapy, which is working with the Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health to set up a regulatory framework for yoga therapy in the UK.

THE REQUEST: Our progress has throughout been hindered by lack of funds, and our advances have only been possible through generous voluntary work, donations and personal sacrifice. We are currently short of funds because of a rental increase and the departure of another organisation, which was sharing our premises and rent with us. While we are taking steps to remedy this situation, the momentum for our work is in danger of being reduced by lack of funds. Hence this fundraising drive.

Please, please try to make time to help. Besides sponsoring our Marathon, yourself, you can make it known to your friends, colleagues and/or yoga students. You will see the fruits of it in the years to come.
With many thanks for your support
