Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

For those that don't know, an IronMan event involves a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile cycle, followed by a 26.2 mile run/jog/walk/stagger/crawl (Marathon) - which all have to be completed within 17 hours from the gun going off at 6:00am!

I'm not good getting up in the morning, and have never even done a half marathon, so please be generous!

You may wonder why on earth I am putting myself through this - believe me, you are not alone!  During a 100 mile training cycle at the weekend that thought wasn't far from my mind either!!  At least by doing it for good causes I hope my pain will be worth it.

9/9/09   Well, I did it!!!  The day started with breakfast at 3:00am, followed by a dip in a rather chilly lake just after 6:00am, before the sun had even bothered to rise.  The 2.4 mile swim took 1:22:05.  A quick change out of my wetsuit and I was on my bike.  The 112 mile cycle up and down (and up and down, and up and down) the hilly, and rather windy, Dorset countryside took 7:01:44.  During the cycle I hit a top speed of 42 mph - very scary when only holding onto the handlebars with one hand, with an energy bar in the other!  The run through the grounds of Sherborne Castle and the town itself was also rather hilly, although the support from all the people who turned up to cheer was a great boost to morale (as were the cheering crowds on the bike course).  I managed to complete the 26.2 mile "run" in 5:53:20, not a quick stand alone marathon time, but not bad considering it was the first time I had ever run more than 10 miles!  So at the end of an epic day of constant exercise, having burnt around 10,000 kcal, I crossed the finish line in 14:30:05 to become an Ironman!

Was it worth it?  Well, looking at all the money you generous people have given I would say a wholehearted YES!  In a few days' time, when I hope to have recovered from my aches and pains, I expect I will be even more enthusiatic.

Would I recommend doing an Ironman?  Definitely...... although if you are tempted I'd suggest signing up more than 2 months before, and training accordingly.  You might even want to think about doing some running training...  26.2 miles is quite a long way, and even longer after a 112 mile cycle.
