The World Cup 2022 starts today in Qatar, I will not be watching.
Instead, in the 29 days the tournament runs for, I will be running the distance of London to Paris, 336km, 8 Marathons.
I love the World Cup, and I love supporting my beloved England even more.
Every four years I have four weeks of dreaming of world cup victory, heart screaming and brain unable to focus hours before a game, I get to share 90 minutes in shared unison with my country, I celebrate and commiserate with the people I love most, beers in hands all sharing feelings of joy & loss.
It truly is a very special moment in time for me.
However, I have battled with this world cup from the very start and it is with a very heavy heart I cannot support this coming World cup.
There are a plethora of reasons I will not be watching my beloved England play in the greatest sporting event on the planet.
Here are to name just a few:
- 6,500 Migrant workers died during the construction of the tournament,
- The use of Modern-day slaves.
- The country's views on Women's rights
- Their despicable track record on Gay rights
- Censorship of the press
This world cup is the pinnacle of grotesque FIFA corruption.
And, I won't be allowing our world cup to be used for sports washing on such a rancid country.
Now, because I will not be watching this World Cup I will have quite a lot of free time to fill, that would have been used watching the beautiful sport.
So I have decided to use this time to try and do something beneficial.
During this World Cup tournament, I will run the equivalent distance of London to Paris, which is the same as running from the sacred ground that is Selhurst Park, the pride of south Londons, Crystal Palace’s stadium, all the way to the crown jewel of Yorkshire, Valley Parade; the stadium of the Mighty Bradford City FC.
I will have 29 days to run the distance of 8 Marathons / 336km
I am fundraising for: Amnesty International.
Amnesty International is a movement of ordinary people from across the world standing up for humanity and human rights. When injustice happens to one person, it happens to us all. Recent campaigns include refugee and migrant rights, climate change, children's rights, women's rights, Syrian conflict and LGBTI rights. Amnesty's biggest achievements include outlawing torture, holding war criminals to account and controlling the arms trade. Your support is of significant value - only together can we continue to make a difference.
Please help and give what you can.
All My Love
Robert Strang
