Story
At The Myton Hospices we believe that everyone matters for every single moment of their life; we focus on enhancing life when cure is no longer an option. We are leaders in compassionate end of life care; our work centres on our patients and involving them in decisions about their care. Perhaps most importantly we give them more quality time with their loved ones.Last year we supported more than 1,800 people and their families, in our three hospices, via our patient & family support services, and in the community through Myton at Home.
My wife has a disability which makes it almost impossible for her to walk. We have been fortunate enough for her to be able to attend specific days at the Coventry Myton Hospice in weeks during this year and the care and support given to Carol, my wife during this period would have had to be experienced to be able to appreciate what good it has done for her.
During one of her visiting days I noticed that the Hospice were promoting a specific fund raising event involving abseiling down the side of Coventry Cathedral. I realised I could repay the love and care shown to Carol by the Staff at Myton Hospice by doing something like this albeit it so happened that the planned dates for the abseiling were taking place whilst we were on holiday. Drat it I thought, or something like that and began to think of whether there might be an alternative action that would attract sponsorship. That's when I thought of the Wing Walk.
It's important to note that all of the initial costs of carrying out the Wing Walk , ie the actual cost of it and any associated costs, are being borne by mw and that all funds raised through sponsorship will be going directly The Myton Hospice.
What's involved in a Wing Walk? Well, I'll be strapped to a pole on top of an aircraft, wearing a white flying suit with red Myton butterfly logos painted on it, playing my banjo and singing a song that I have specially written for the event. The aircraft will fly me for for about 10 to 12 minutes performing moves such that my friends and relatives on the ground will be able to take the most advantageous pictures of me .
This all takes place on the 30th of May at about 2.00pm at Rendcomb Aerodrome, the home of the Breitling Wing Walkers, in the Cotswolds. Entry is free . Obviously other things will be taking place at this time but I am the only and the first, (possible the last!) to do a Wing Walk for the Myton Hospice . Thanks for reading this and thanks very much if you feel able to sponsor my challenge. Robert Smith, aged 78 years.
Wow, I've just returned from an interview live on air with BBC Coventry and Warwickshire and their presenter, Vic Minet. What Special Lady. She has the ability to make you so at ease and can tee you up with a follow up question as easy as spreading jam on bread! Such a talent. Charlotte was there from Myton Hospice fund raising unit and effortlessly described the work of the Hospice and the fund raising events that are taking place presently. I didn't know for example that they have to raise £9,2 million this year just to break even and keep all their operations running! There may be a follow up interview after I've done the Wing Walk so watch this space.
