Story
I am extremely proud that my Grandad, Dr Ken Davies, was a founder and a long term President of Cancer Research Wales. He was one of the most genuine and humble people I've had in my life. For his incredible work with charities and the NHS in Wales he received an OBE.
When I was 14 my grandad passed away, after contributing so much to important and fundamental research in cancer. I would like to carry on my grandad's phenomenal legacy by helping to raise as much as possible for Cancer Research Wales. The second and third challenge I will be completing for them will be trekking over parts of Iceland and a world record marathon attempt.
The world record attempt will be completed at the The Wales Marathon, Tenby. Where myself and over 119 other people will be linked together to get the World Record for ‘the most runners linked to complete a marathon’.
Cancer can strike anyone at anytime, because of this life is so precious. It is there to be lived to its fullest, to push ourselves to our limits and to continuously learn and grow. I am lucky that I can still push myself physically and mentally, and I want to raise money for those who unfortunately can't because of cancer. The trek through Iceland will be a physical and mental challenge. I will learn more about myself, this beautiful planet and meet more brilliant people supporting Cancer Research Wales.
The money that you donate to Cancer Research Wales goes to funding a variety of vital research to battle cancer. This research is undertaken in the universities and hospitals throughout Wales and covers many cancer sites that include cancers of the prostate, colon, breast, kidney, blood (leukaemia), cervix and esophagus.
Even though Cancer Research Wales is small, it punches massively above its weight in what it has added to cancer research around the world. From having Europe's first "Cancer Bank", to helping create gold standard screening practices for prostate cancer and funding other pioneering cancer research projects.
If I can make just a fraction of a contribution that my extraordinary grandad made, then I will feel immensely proud and that I am helping to continue his and Cancer Research Wales' amazing work.
Any donation you can make I will really appreciate. You can help me reach my goal of £3000 to support Cancer Research Wales' vital research. While also helping me tackle the adventure of trekking Iceland and the challenge of completing a marathon and obtaining a World Record.
Thank you so much,
Rob Davies.
