Story
You will all be aware that my gorgeous 8yr daughter Eleri was diagnosed with a rare type of primary bone cancer called Osteosarcoma. The battle she was in had only one winner, unfortunately she wasn’t the side celebrating. Eleri passed away on the 14 September 2019 at 15:35. She had an incredible smile, was the bravest and strongest person I have ever known and will never be forgotten.
Eleri’s fight with cancer was debilitating not only physically but mentally. At diagnosis the disease was found in her right femur with nodules on her chest. Due to it’s aggressive nature, emergency surgery was required to remove the bone and tumour. After 4 months of 1st line chemotherapy a chest CT scan showed a metastatic 2cm tumour in her right lung. 2nd line treatment was offered and we accepted and positive results were seen. Eleri had lung surgery in Nov and following this we had 4-5 months of what looked like remission. In April, she had another major operation to insert an endo prosthesis which with Physiotherapy would help her to realise her dream of walking again. Ambitious, walking was just the start, she longed to be like any other 8yr old and she always said that her main aim was to run like she remembered doing. Unfortunately Eleri’s dream did not become a reality. In June, a CT scan showed that a new 6cm tumour has grown and that palliative chemotherapy to try and extend Eleri’s life was our only option. We opted for this even though we knew that it would make Eleri feel so ill and we were right. We discussed Eleri’s treatment and painfully but at the same time compassionately decided to stop. Out of all the decisions we have had to make, this was by far the toughest however it allowed Eleri to feel well and enjoy her life and as a family we could enjoy what time we had left with our princess.
I have fallen in love with running and before I ever went, Eleri would ask how far I was going, where and that I needed to make sure I came home. Every step I run is for every step Eleri would have taken.
I completed the half marathon in 2018 and the huge support I received allowed me to raise a fantastic amount of money for Cardiff University, helping to fund their cancer research projects. I plan to run this event each and every year until I am unable to do so.
PLEASE, PLEASE help me continue to raise money for ground breaking research that will find/contribute to a cure for this horrendous disease!!
