Story
I am raising money for Diabetes UK as I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic just over 2 years ago and have lived with the condition ever since. Since I was diagnosed I have used running as my main control mechanism for my blood sugar.
However, at the end of November 2023 I was assaulted in central London after going to a comedy show which caused a brain injury and I was rushed to A&E.
I spent close to a week within the high dependency brain injury unit in a South London hospital before being discharged to return home. The incident affected my concentration and bleeding down my spinal cord had an extremely negative impact on my mobility.
Through stretching and swimming I was able to go on my first walk a week after returning home and have used running as a great source of recovery both physically and mentally.
Once hospitalised it flipped my control on its head as I was no longer able to get out of bed so my activity level fell to zero. Now that I'm on the road to recovery I am trying to get my activity back to where it was to keep by sugar levels within the healthy range.
Type 1 Diabetes is a condition where your pancreas can no longer produce insulin leading to your body's control of its blood sugar levels being lost.
I found my diagnoses incredibly traumatic and it took me a long time to come to terms with my new life as a T1 diabetic.
I started running last January as a way to keep fit, relax and most importantly keep my blood sugar levels under control. Not long after I started, I decided to set my sights on the London Marathon as a great challenge to aim for and focus my training.
I will be running the marathon for Diabetes UK, they are an amazing charity that works to help people through the diagnosis, educates people as to how to live with the condition and invests in research into future treatments.
