I am taking part in the Great South Run for the second year running to raise money this year for LOROS,  a local charity which helps terminally ill patients and their families.

The charity helped Matthew Hollins and his family earlier this year.

This is what he emailed me.

I'm very pleased and touched that my good friend Rob Bramley is doing the Great South Run on October 25th, for LOROS, in memory of my dad Malcolm, who passed away in February.

My dad was also a keen runner for many years, he completed the Leicester Marathon in the late 1970's and was a keen orienteer and rugby player.  He was a keen Leicester Tigers fan, he also supported City and enjoyed watching folk and jazz music live and was a keen supporter of the Leicester Comedy Festival, I offered to get him a wristband one year so he could watch the shows for free, but he said he'd prefer to pay and support the artists.

For most of his working life my dad was an accounts clerk, he was also a Littlewoods pools collector from the 1970's until he retired through ill health last year. My mum Ruth passed away in 2010, and since then my dad found new and things to do to spend his time, he did a lot of voluntary work with the Leicestershire and Rutland Conservation team doing valuable work all over the county, and also for a couple of Christmas's he worked at the Bridge project based at the Salvation Army HQ in Leicester which was set up as a shelter for homeless people over that period.

In May 2014 we told the awful news that my Dad had Motor Neurone Disease, he'd been struggling with his voice for a while, he couldn't get his words out. This gradually got worse, it's an awful illness espeicially in that sufferers can live for many years, without being able to communicate.  Most people in Leicestershire will know about the great work that LOROS do for people who are terminally ill with cancer, but perhaps not many know that they have a dedicated team of Specialists, Doctors, Nurses and Volunteers who care for MND sufferers and there is an allocation of beds at the hospice.  Dad didn't have to stay there in the end, but I attended several meetings with him at LOROS and a nurse visited him a few times at home.  The care and support was fantastic and I found it both humbling and a pleasure to be around the patients and volunteers in the MND dayroom whilst we waited for my dads appointments.  The volunteers brought care, compassion and humour and brightened up the days of people who'd been struck down by this terrible degenerative terminal illness. For more information on Motor Neurone Disease have a look at www.mndassociation.org.uk

Matt.

So after discussions with Matt we are going to try to raise as much as we can for LOROS.

Please donate what you can.

Thankyou
