Rob: 3 hrs 44 minutes
Haile: No time (failed to compete, possibly as he was scared of my competition...possibly because he had instead decided to compete in the Great North Run this year instead...)
*****
Many of you will have heard of Haile Gebrselassie, but for those of you who haven’t here is a bit of background – Gebrselassie is one of the greatest long distance runners of all time – five times world champion, two times Olympic champion, he has broke 27 world records and has run the 2 fastest marathons of all time. In short, he is a legend.
In order to raise money for charity, I have challenged Gebrselassie to a one-on-one race over his favorite distance – 26.2 miles, around the same course where he set his world marathon record, Berlin. Unfortunately, the Berlin city council weren’t overly keen on closing the streets of the city for just our personal battle and would only let us do it if we let 30,000 other people also join in. They have also insisted on calling the race ‘The Berlin Marathon 2010’ (apparently they didn’t think my suggestion of ‘Rob V Haile: The Duel’ was as catchy as I did). However, hopefully you appreciate the true nature of the race as, I’m sure, does Gebrselassie. If you would like to spur me on in my challenge, I am raising money for the Myasthenia Gravis Association. They help people with, and research into, MG – an auto-immune disease that can affect people of any age, including my Gran. It’s a great cause and they don’t get as many people fundraising for it as some of the bigger charities. Remember, every £1 you raise will be increased by gift aid and doubled by Deloitte. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity. So please dig deep and donate now.
