Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page for JDRF.
The idea of the challenge came to Kenny when someone in the walking group he is a part of said: “Ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things.” He thought this statement couldn't be truer, but if he was going to do something it wouldn't just be for himself, it needed to help and benefit others.
Kenny's niece, Annalise who is 7 has type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed when she was 22 months old. Her resilience dealing with diabetes is truly inspiring as she takes everything thrown at her in her stride.
Kenny contacted a family friend who is a mountain leader and with some tips and advice from him started planning the route. While planning the route and looking at the map realising just quite how far it is from the east coast to the west coast of Scotland, he decided it was maybe a little foolhardy to try and take this on himself. He then turned to his close friend Darren who has done a long-distance walk before. When we met up to discuss the plan before Kenny had said anything, Darren said: “Right whatever it is I’m in!”
Kenny came up with the route to go from Aberdeen to Ardnamurchan. Starting at the lighthouse in Torry and finishing at the lighthouse on the point of Ardnamurchan (235 miles). The route goes from Royal Deeside through the heart of the Cairngorms, then from Aviemore to Fort William following elements of the East highland way. From Fort William mainly following old drove roads to the point of Ardnamurchan.
However, while putting the finishing touches to the route in November 2019, Kenny's nephew Hamish was taken into the hospital to find he also has type 1 diabetes at only 27 months old. To say the least, this has fuelled our ambition to complete the walk even more and try to raise as much money as possible for JDRF.
