Story
My (and JDRF's) goal is simple: a cure for type 1 diabetes- and my aim is to raise as much as I can to finance the research that is going to find it. My youngest son is a medical student- and I do not want him or any of his colleagues ever to face having to tell parents that one of them is going to have to inject- and cause pain to - their beloved infant at least four times a day, simply to keep their baby alive.
My involvement with JDRF started in 1984, when I helped establish the UK arm of JDRF as a lawyer at Slaughter and May. I was diagnosed with type 1 in 1989, just after I became a father for the first time - and a partner in SandM. I subsequently became responsible for our pro bono legal advice to JDRF.
I have taken part, with my wife and five children, in many walks and other JDRF activities over the years, but life as a City lawyer precluded any major events....until I retired after 35 years last August. I am now reading for a D.Phil (in law!) at Oxford - and, having joined the JDRF Board, I was a (willing?) volunteer when the JDRF staff suggested the trek might benefit from a JDRF director who has type 1 diabetes on board.....something about raising the average age, while reducing the average pace?
