The RiverStone team are hoping to raise over £2,500 for the COINS Foundation from its participation in the annual Insurance Industry Challenge. The Challenge takes place at Millwall Docks on 17 September and involves a dragon boat racing event followed by a cycle relay and a 2km run. Details are here.
The COINS Foundation aims to support projects which address local issues in a sustainable way. It works with its project partners and sponsors to create projects that change the root causes of poverty and discrimination and to develop long-term solutions which will help to bring about permanent change. The Foundation receives sponsorship for all of its costs, which means that 100% of the money raised goes to its project partners. In its first round of grants in September 2008, COINS Foundation supported projects to build decent homes for nearly 500 orphans across , and and provided funds to build a secondary school in . Further details of the Foundation’s work are at http://www.coinsfoundation.org.
The proceeds from this year’s Challenge will help fund a development plan for the entire community of Kawama in . Kawama is a desperately poor region that is home to 22,000 people. Early practical projects include the expansion of a school for orphans and vulnerable children, establishing a vocational training programme in construction skills, a sanitation project to bring running water to the school and a community-wide health needs assessment programme.
