Story
In support of this great cause, Rudy’s father Rhys and 4 of his close friends (Andy Harston / Greg Burnham / CJ / Robbo) will be completing the mammoth challenge of cycling from Rhys’ home town rugby club of Syston RFC in Leicestershire, to HMS Victory in Portsmouth, where Rhys now serves in the Royal Navy. This grueling challenge (for a bunch of cycling amateurs) will be over 170 miles, in excess of 18 hours in the saddle!
The cycle will take place on Saturday 16th September 2023
Rudy is a happy, brave and kind 3 year old who has spastic diplegia. We are fundraising to support the intense rehabilitation he will need before, and after a potentially life changing spinal surgery. The Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy Surgery (SDR) will result in him walking easier, safer, and without pain.
He has been exceptionally fortunate to be accepted for a potentially life changing spinal surgery. This involves making an incision in the spine, moving a bone and then finding the nerves that send signals down to Rudy's legs causing the spasticity. 66-75% of these are then cut permanently.
After the surgery comes the hard part. Rudy will have to learn to walk again and coordinate his legs without the spasticity. This process is not quick and will take a lot of intense rehabilitation for at least 2 years after the surgery. Although the NHS fund some increased therapy for a short period after the operation it is no where near what he needs to get the best results, which is at least 3hrs of therapy a week. We can only do this by privately funding his rehabilitation.
Any money donated will go to tree of hope and will be vital assistance to Rudy.
Thank you for all your help and support
