Story

**Please note this page has been created to replace the original Virgin Money Giving Fundraising page. The total raised to date (30.11.21) via VMG is £13,333.58**

It has been over 2 years since the original date was set for Ride4Ruby London to Paris.

Chris Richard and Ben were due to complete the bike ride in April 2020, but due to covid this wasn't able to take place. Instead, they got on their bikes in October 2021 and cycled from Bristol to Bude, which was a great achievement and a great practise for "the real thing".

The boys are currently in training for the real deal...London to Paris 2022!!! BRING IT ON!

We are so grateful for your ongoing support to Helen & Chris and The Little Roo Neonatal Fund. The amount we have raised to date is outstanding. We can't thank you all enough.

The Ruby Effect continues to spread!

A Message From Ruby's Mummy & Daddy - Helen & Chris

Why They're Cycling 330+ Miles

On Wednesday 5th June 2019 at 4:09am, our beautiful daughter Ruby was born full term at East Surrey Hospital after a very textbook pregnancy and labour. During the final stages of labour Ruby did not receive oxygen and therefore after resuscitation, she was left with a brain injury called HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy).

Ruby was later transferred to Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey where she was very closely monitored in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). Chris and I were able to stay in one of the 5 family rooms in the NICU whilst our immediate family stayed closed by.

Ruby tried so hard for 2.5 days, however there was sadly no improvement on her brain activity and therefore we, as her mummy and daddy, had to make the worst decision anyone should ever have to make, and that was to remove her life support. On Friday 7th June 2019 at 6:57pm we said goodnight to our beautiful, dark haired baby girl, Ruby. Whilst this was the hardest thing we have ever had to go through, we were able to do it with such dignity and care with thanks to her “NICU Aunties” who were with us every step of our journey.

The care and support we were all given by the nurses and team at the hospital was out of this world. We got to do all the normal things any mummy and daddy should be able to do. We bathed Ruby, changed her nappy, dressed her, read her stories and sang to her.

We stayed together as a family for a further 3 days in the Daffodil Bereavement Room. This time was so precious, as we continued to care for Ruby, cuddle her and make more memories with the help of Ruby’s daily dedicated nurse.

We are not able to thank everyone involved in Ruby’s care enough - without them, we would have been unable to spend such special moments together as a family and create so many treasured memories.

More about The Little Roo Neonatal Fund…

The Little Roo Neonatal Fund was set up by a team of doctors, nurses, parents and support staff and as part of the Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals Charitable Trust with the specific aim of supporting the NICU.

St Peter’s is the only hospital in Surrey with the appropriate staff, equipment, skills and experience to provide this highest level of intensive care for the smallest and sickest newborn babies.

Each Neonatal Intensive care cot costs in the region of £80,000 to fully equip, and they have also been able to purchase an ultrasound machine (£60k), equipment to help babies breathe (£4k to £20k each), a breast milk pasteuriser (£19k) and devices for treating and monitoring potential brain injury (£20k).

There is always an ongoing need for additional and replacement specialist equipment, and also to send staff for specialist training that the NHS cannot provide funding for.

The Little Roo Neonatal Fund therefore raises money to provide the support that the St. Peter’s Neonatal Unit continues to require to offer the highest standards of intensive care for babies born in Surrey and further afield.
