Story
Hey Everyone!
Come this October, I'm crossing the seven seas, otherwise known as the Atlantic Ocean, to spend 10 glorious weeks in sunny Nicaragua! This is all courtesy of ICS, the International Citizen Service, a scheme involved in bringing people together to fight poverty, as well as Raleigh International Trust, an amazing charity that inspires young people to make a difference and become active members in the fight for long term community development in areas that need it the most!
Nicaragua is one of the largest and poorest countries in Central America with a population of over 6 million people. 50% live below the poverty line and 80% of the population live on less than £1.20 a day!
I'll be working on development projects in rural communities in Nicaragua, whose members have especially requested Raleigh International's help. Working alongside other dedicated volunteers from both England and Nicaragua, we will hopefully work with the community in building eco-latrines, establishing a clean water source and finding ways to encourage both sustainable farming practices and hygiene in the community.
I'm raising £1500 for Raleigh International, so that they can carry on sending unsuspecting people like me to amazing places like Nicaragua to do something useful! Whatever I manage to raise will hopefully mean they can continue to challenge the way that people think about sustainable development in the community. You can check out their amazing
work at http://raleighinternational.org/.
I'll be doing a few things to fundraise, including a bake sale, a raffle, and selling a few things on eBay, as well as "Live Below the Line" - As so many Nicaraguans live off less than £1.20 a day, I will try and do the same for a week! This will include travel and food and entertainment so wish me luck! I'll be doing this on the 25th-30th of August.
You can keep track of how I get on here on my Justgiving page, instagram, twitter and facebook. Any contribution would make a real difference to the lives of people in developing countries, so please dig deep!
Thanks for your support!
