Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

St Mary's Hospice has become very dear to my families hearts. This charity provides many services to all in our local community in times of illness and need.

I am raising funds for the Hospice by trying to complete the Lands' End to John O' Groats Challenge, which is walking 874 miles this year. I hope to finish on 16th October which marks the 2nd anniversary of me losing my wife.

My wife, Marie, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Her last full day at home, she was in good spirits, playing with all the grandchildren with all the family having been around, she didn't seem ill at all but then overnight she deteriorated rapidly. I took her to hospital and she was admitted to Ward 2, the ward manager and her team were brilliant and did everything she could to help culminating in her being transferred to St Mary's Hospice after a few days.

Marie arrived at the Hospice on her birthday, she was made as comfortable as possible in the room near the waterfall and her parents and siblings came to give their cards and say their final goodbyes. In the final 6 days the Hospice staff did everything they could to make Marie comfortable, nothing was too much trouble. The family and I were so well looked after, by the doctors, nurses, café staff, reception staff, support staff, etc. In fact everyone at the hospice were so supportive and helpful at the worst time of my life.

After Marie passed away the Hospice have continued to give and offer support for my family. Personally I have been using the Bereavement Support service which has helped me get through some of the bad times grief throws at you.

We are trying to reach a total to pay for a nurse for a day (24hrs) which is £9,500. To date with donations and help from all on other fundraising over the past years our total stands at £7,478. Raising another £2,022 is a big ask over the coming months but is a good target to try for. Any donation is greatly received and Thank you to you all from the bottom of our hearts.
